Health Care

By Lynn Hilburn

Last week's topic was health care. I thought I would add a few words since this is what I am thinking about this last week. I just got out of the hospital, stayed there 5 days and got a lot of tests done for some health issues I was having, went through the emergency room and also had several EKG's and lab work done. I have no insurance, so I am afraid to see what my bill is going to be. Probably around $20,000 or more. The thing that gets me is the itemized bill they will send and the outrageous prices. Like for instance, $12 for a tylenol. Come on, who makes up these prices?? If I could have found decent, affordable insurance my health would not have gotten so bad that I had to go to the emergency room. I make too much money to qualify for medicaid, in my state a person can only make around $500 dollars a month? Is that not crazy? I work at a homeless shelter and I was making a joke the other week and said, "what does a person have to do around here to be able to get some medical help?" "I guess, I could quit my job and we could go live at the shelter and then I could get medical care." I was being funny, but that is about the truth. It's really sad that we live in a country so blessed with resources yet millions of american people are dying everyday due to the lack of medical care. What is the solution? I don't know, but hopefully our government figures it out and actually does something about it.

If you hold your breath waiting for the government to fix it you won't need health care.
